Lameness
Lameness Examination
A good lameness examination is essential to diagnosing soundness issues. Because veterinarians cannot ask their patients where it hurts, they are dependent upon visual cues from the horse as it moves. A lameness evaluation includes a physical exam, palpation of the limbs and joints, evaluating range of motion, watching the horse travel in a straight line and on a lunge line and response to flexion of the joints. Horses are evaluated in both hard and soft surfaces to differentiate between bone and soft tissue injuries. Further diagnostics include nerve blocks, joint blocks, radiographs and ultrasound. The initial diagnostic work-up may be performed in the field as well as in the hospital.

Complete Radiographic Services
Our X-ray equipment consists of a large high quality 500 MA Picker hospital unit. This is powerful enough to take pictures of the vertebrae, the thorax, long bones and the abdominal cavity. Our two portable 20 MA units take excellent pictures of the feet and legs. Accompanying these machines we have an automatic film processor and dark room; the Hope Micromax develops one radiograph every 90 seconds. We are also able to convert films into digital form for e-mail or copies on disc.

Radiographs for Proper Shoe Placement
Radiographs of the foot determine where the optimum break over point is in relation to the coffin bone. We recommend that radiographs be taken annually to help your farrier place your horse’s shoes correctly and achieve a proper balance. The office visit is discounted and radiographs for this purpose are half price. This service includes a personal consultation with your farrier to establish a relationship between farrier, owner and veterinarian in an effort to achieve the best possible outcome for your horse.

Dentistry
The equine tooth continues to erupt throughout the life of the horse. As the teeth are in wear, sharp points form and can cause uncomfortable ulcers in the mouth. Because of this, annual dental examinations are recommended to locate and correct problems before they start. We correct dental problems by floating, or filing down, the sharp points of the tooth and aligning any abnormal molar occlusion. If you notice your horse chewing abnormally, losing weight, dropping food, head shaking, or resisting the bit, these may be signs that your horse needs a corrective float. More subtle problems may prevent the performance athlete from flexing, bending or reaching his full potential. We have modern motorized dental equipment, hand floats and oral speculums to allow good visualization of the oral cavity. Our dental services include a thorough examination of the teeth and gums, floating, incisor reduction, hook removal, molar alignment, bite adjustment, wolf tooth removal, bit seats and tooth extractions. All dental services are performed under standing sedation with the horses head in a natural position.

Reproduction Services
Mare Services
Services include a breeding soundness exam, uterine culture and cytology, uterine biopsy, rectal palpation and digital ultrasound, artificial insemination with fresh or frozen semen and pregnancy diagnosis and fetal-sexing. Complete breeding packages and mare management for Live Cover and Artificial Insemination with chilled and frozen semen are available. With the exception of AI with frozen semen, all of our mare services can be performed in the field or at our clinic.

Stallion Services
Our stallion services include a breeding soundness exam, training to mount the breeding phantom, semen collection and evaluation and shipping of fresh semen. Stallions are collected multiple times and semen is evaluated for motility, morphology and longevity. If you do not have access to a breeding phantom, we request that your stallion be brought into the clinic for collection and evaluation.

Foaling Services
Our foaling services include in-hospital monitoring of the mare as she reaches the end of her pregnancy, assisted foaling, emergency treatment of dystocias and assistance for retained placentas. Our post-foaling services include a placental examination, neonatal examination 12-24 hours post foaling (physical exam, neonatal vaccinations and stall side foal IgG SNAP test), plasma transfusion in foals that did not receive adequate colostrum (failure of passive transfer of the maternal antibodies) and intensive monitoring for sick or premature foals.

Regulatory Medicine
Coggins papers and health certificates are required for transporting your horse between states and for international travel. The Coggins test is the federally required test that determines the EIA (Equine Infectious Anemia) status of your horse. If a horse is positive for EIA, it is prohibited from interstate travel transported unless to a specially licensed handling facility. This test should be performed whenever transporting horses across state lines. Most Coggins tests take 4-7 days for results to arrive in the mail so plan accordingly before you travel. Health certificates are required for entry into other states and for most shows. These forms require a current Coggins and brief physical examination to ensure the shipping of healthy animals. A health certificate is valid for 30 days. For international travel, health certificates are more involved and require the signature of the federal veterinarian. Please allow adequate time for the preparation of these papers before you travel.

Permanent Identification
Permanently identify your horse with a microchip or freeze branding. The microchip is implanted under the skin along the top side of the horse’s neck. Most sale barns and auctions across the country have horses checked for microchips before they enter the sale ring. Freeze branding produces white hairs in the shape of your registered brand; a visible deterrent to theft.

Internal Medicine
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is an excellent non-invasive diagnostic tool. We have two portable ultrasound machines that allow us to perform reproductive examinations, thoracic ultrasound to evaluate the lungs and heart, abdominal ultrasound to evaluate organs such as the liver, kidney and spleen, and lameness diagnosis such as tendon injury. Ultrasound can also be useful to locate foreign bodies such as wood splinters in puncture wounds and abscesses.

Endoscopy
The use of an endoscope is an excellent way to examine the upper airways, trachea and esophagus. The most common reasons for using endoscopy include nasal masses and hematomas, guttural pouch infections, “roarers,” recurrent cough or upper airway inflammation, and choke or other esophageal diseases. Endoscopy is useful in the visual evaluation and diagnosis of disease.

Pre-Purchase Exam
A pre-purchase examination allows veterinarians and prospective buyers the opportunity to work together to find the right horse for the buyer. This service starts with a thorough physical examination, ophthalmic exam and extensive lameness evaluation. Hands-on evaluation of joints, muscles and tendons to identify any abnormalities is followed by joint flexions and manipulations to rule out subtle lameness. Joints are evaluated for any problems that might arise in the future. Radiographs and nerve blocks, as well as complete blood work or drug testing, might be recommended depending on the findings of the initial exam and the intended use of the horse. Pre-purchase examinations can be performed in the field or in the hospital.
